Hurricane Season
Every year around mid-late May hurricane season begins and lasts until the end of November. Typically, you don’t see the first hurricane form until late August-early September, giving you plenty of time at the beginning of the year to prepare.

Prepping Your Trees
- Implement correct pruning for proper growth and development. This practice needs to be put into place while the tree is still young, giving it a chance to grow a robust and dominant trunk and well-spaced, healthy branches. Properly developed trees will be less problematic for property owners, and they will stand a much higher chance against the harsh Florida climate.
- Weight reduction. This includes pruning overextended limbs, low hanging limbs, and limbs with the same diameter as the trunk. In most cases, the outer edges of the canopy will need to be thinned, and any cracked limbs will be removed or trimmed as well.
- Avoid topping. This practice is one of the most common – yet incorrect methods we’ve seen. Beware of tree services that suggest reducing risk by removing the top of the limbs. Such practices will kill the tree over time, not to mention the eyesore it creates! There is not a need for topping when you have the tree pruned regularly and adequately by an experienced and appropriately trained arborist.
- Remove all dead wood, AKA “dead wooding.” Avoid damage to surrounding property by having dead or decaying tree limbs removed. In any case, especially in a storm with high winds, these dead limbs can become deadly debris! An experienced arborist will be able to assess your tree and inform you of any limbs that need to be removed to keep you and your family safe.
- Remove all dead and decaying trees. Dead and decaying trees are a hazard to surrounding property and should be removed immediately, especially in the case of a storm. This may sound like a no-brainer, but sometimes dead or decaying trees get overlooked. A trained professional will be able to spot the signs and inform you of the proper course of action to take.
