Recognizing Tree Risk

Knowledge is Power

Your trees add significant value to your home and property, which is part of the reason we encourage tree owners to invest in professional and safe tree care! When trees are left unmanaged they can become an eyesore and a huge liability. When you understand and address the risks associated with trees, it keeps your property safe and prolongs the life of the tree! As a tree owner, it’s your responsibility to provide for the safety of the trees that are on your property. We created a convenient list of risks to be aware of and look out for.

Checklist:

  • Dead branches
  • Broken or hanging branches
  • Cavities or rotten wood along the trunk or large branches
  • Mushrooms present at the base of the tree
  • Cracks along the trunk or where branches are attached
  • Adjacent trees dead or fallen over
  • Leaning trunk
  • Major branches forming from one area of the trunk
  • Broken, inured, or exposed roots
  • Recent disturbance to the site and soil due to construction
  • Premature change in leaf color
  • Topped or heavily prunned tree

ISA Certified Arborist

At the end of the day, It is always best to consult with an ISA Certified Arborist to not only find out exactly what is wrong with your tree but to find out what your options are for managing or correcting the issue.
Possible solutions a professional and experienced arborist will provide;
  • Pruning or weight reduction of the canopy.
  • Cabel and bracing – This means to provide physical support of weak branches and stems to increase strength and stability.
  • Create a maintenance plan for regular care. The tree may be nutrient deficient and require extra care.
  • Remove the tree completely if the tree is beyond repair and poses a threat to the surrounding area.
Fun Fact: Healthy and well-kept trees can increase property value by up to 20%.

Recognizing and reducing tree risk not only increases the safety of your property and your neighbor’s property but also improves the health and potentially the value of your property!

“Proper tree care is an investment that can lead to substantial returns.”
